Fall Road Trip - Part 4
Heading West to Joe’s I knew it was that time of year where we could run into bad weather. In 2019 on the same weekend snow kept me from leaving Spell’s in Denver until the middle of the day. Sure enough the day I got to Joe’s I ran into a dusting of snow in Black Forest and then we had this the next day.

The good news is that it only lasted for one day and most of the snow melted off before the race.

It was pretty but I was glad it didn’t stick around. We watched a bunch of TV, caught up on friends and memories and shared some good food prepared by Joe. It was green chili season so it was a balancing act between how many and when to eat them with an upcoming race.

When race day came it was still cold but not bad except in the shade where there was still ice on the ground. Everyone who did the 2019 Creepy Crawl was there except Rashaan because he was involved with the High School State XC Championships.

Gerald was 5th overall, 4th male and 1st in his age group and I was very surprised to finish 2nd in mine.

It was a great get together and we finished at O’Malleys for lunch. Everything was good except the coleslaw for some reason.

Went to a nice independent bookstore in Monument and a really well stocked liquor store in the Springs.

The trip back was mostly an uneventful drive with nights spent in underwhelming Motel 6s. I think Albuquerque was the worst with no top sheet on the bed.

But Fresno was a close second being the most expensive and where Charlie probably saw his life flash before his eyes after being confronted by three unleashed pit bulls with an apologetic owner. Fortunately for all of us they weren’t aggressive. I think Charlie dreamed about them though.

On the drive Charlie spent the majority of every day sitting and watching my foot to see if I was going to hit the brakes for a stop. He even does that when we’re just running errands. It’s really funny.

I made the right decision from a weather standpoint and we didn’t hit snow until we got near Shasta in Northern California and then had it off and on lightly until after we went through Ashland, Oregon before stopping the last night in Medford.

Back to Covid! I got this picture from Joe the day after we left his place. He tested positive and had to get medication from his doctor.

As always Charlie settled right back in at home. I think he was tired from acting as my copilot.
